How were the lessons set up?
There is an assessment you can have you child start with in order to gauge where they are in this system. I highly recommend it because it will help you know what lessons your child needs and which ones you can bypass.
CTC Math starts the student out with a video lesson. These lessons are full of color and are very fun for the child who is watching them. They average about 3-5 minutes for the courses that I have had my children complete.
After the child completes the video portion there is a question and answer section where the child can apply what they learned in the video component.
There is also a portion of the student page where the child can work on speed drills. These are 1 minute drills filled with Math problems on different levels. The system tracks their scores and congratulates your child when they beat their previous score.
What did I think of it?
R did not like this approach at all. She is a very hands on learner and there was no option to engage in the video component. Instead the teacher tells her everything and then she is quizzed on it. This is not her learning style at all. For R this would need a component where she could answer the questions the teacher is asking as he is teaching. Otherwise she would not enjoy it.
That being said, she loves the speed drills. She makes it her goal every time to beat her previous score. This is excellent because prior to this option she was always complaining about the Math drills I would make her do to practice her addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts.
For R, this site would be a great supplement to things she already learned but it would not work as a stand alone option.
C seemed to enjoy this site. He liked that the videos were short. For a five year old who is busy as it gets a site that offers short lessons and short quizzes is ideal. He really enjoyed the video. The person teaching the course speaks with an accent which instantly grabbed C’s attention. I also liked that I was able to do the testing and find out what he needed to learn. This gave us the ability to focus on what he needed instead of starting at the beginning and working through.
The best part for C was the ability to answer his own questions using the computer. He is very technology minded and loved the option of typing it in.
How easy is it to use?
This site is very easy to log in to and use. The site design allows to the student or adult to find exactly what they need. I was also happy with the fact that everything was easy for my children to navigate. I used this program on a PC. However the site says that it can be used on multiple platforms.
How much does it cost?
12 months on a family plan is $297 which breaks down to $24.75 a month. With this plan you can add in multiple children on different Math levels under the same account.
