Over the last year our family has started making game time more of a priority by having a family game night and I wanted to share a great review with you. Children can learn so much through games and it is a good way unplug and enjoy time together. When I was asked to review Wonky: the crazy cubes card game and Tapple: Fast word fun for everyone from USAopoly I couldn’t turn it down. Both games looked like a lot of fun and seemed to have some educational components we wouldn’t want to miss. Check out my USAopoly game review below.
How was Wonky: the crazy cubes card game set up?
Wonky has a selection of blocks that look innocent enough until you have to stack them. Each block has an angle or curve to it that makes it harder to stack a tower. Each player is given 7 cards and game play begins. With each turn the player has the opportunity to pick which card they will play. The cards have options for blocks of different colors and sizes as well as cards to reverse game play or skip a turn. The end goal of the game is to be the one with no cards left in your hands and to keep the tower standing. The picture above is my little guy counting the mandatory 3 seconds after placing a block. If the tower stands after 3 seconds the game continues. If not, he is out.
What did I think of Wonky: the crazy cubes card game?
Initially I played this game with just my six year old. It was a lot of fun to sit with him and learn the game together. It took us maybe two minutes to understand the game and then the fun began. We played for quite some time before his sister joined in. It was a lot of fun to watch each person try to stump the next person but picking the block that seemed hardest to stack from.
This game would be great if you are working on colors or size because you need to understand both to play. Don’t be surprised if your kids get frustrated sometimes though. It is hard to see your tower go toppling down. The game is listed as 8+ but my 6 year had a blast playing it so the age may really depend on the child.
I also loved that it came with a cloth draw string bag that I could put all the blocks and cards in to to make clean up easy.
How was Tapple: Fast word fun for everyone set up?
Tapple is a fast paced game that has you racing the timer while trying to remember what words start with. At the beginning of the game a category is chosen. From there the little red hand above is tapped and the timer begins. You have to pick a word based on the category and tap the letter it starts with. Each letter can only be tapped once. This may sound simple but the further in to the process you get the harder it becomes to remember what cartoon characters start with the letter K.
When the buzzer goes off or a person is stumped that person is removed from the game. The goal is to be the last man standing in this crazy battle.
What did I think of Tapple: Fast word fun for everyone?
Tapple was a lot of fun for our family. We really enjoyed some of the categories while others were a bit over their heads. We simply skipped the ones we knew they wouldn’t thrive with and had fun with the others. We laughed a lot as we raced the timer and tried to be the last man standing. It was also a lot of fun for us to make up our own categories and continue game play after the cards were gone.
This game can be frustrating for a younger child who is not strong with phonics. However, if your child is good at figuring out what things start with they are sure to have a great time.
The only thing I would change is to have a longer buzzer. The buzzer was very short. By the time you got started it was already going off. This may be fine for a larger group of adults but for a smaller group of adults or children this can get frustrating.
This game is easy to put away and that is a huge perk. I am all for a game that will let you keep all of the pieces in one easy location.
