While it can be amazing to have a child that reads above their reading level, it can also be frustrating. While their reading level goes up they are still in a younger maturity level. My friends and I have spent a lot of time trying to find books that are age appropriate but not on a lower reading level. I have put together this list of 15 books for advanced readers you won’t want to miss!
15 Books for Advanced Readers
A Series of Unfortunate Events – This is not a happy go lucky series. If your child is very sensitive I would avoid this series. It’s about 3 children who are orphaned and put in the care of a guardian who doesn’t care for them in the slightest. There are many great adventures the children have as they try to escape the clutches of a guardian who shouldn’t have them.
Boxcar Children – This was my absolute favorite series as a child. I loved the adventure and so has my daughter. This is a really great series and I love that it gives multiple books for the child to really get to know the characters.
Chronicles of Narnia – While the books are smaller and a quicker read these are great books for your reader who is ready to read something a bit deeper.
Choose Your Own Adventure – These are so much fun for advanced readers because they give the child control of the story. While they can be a quick read it will depend on how quickly your child solves the mystery. Be prepared. There are options that will end with the character dying. If this bothers you, avoid this series.
Isle of the Lost – This book is a prequel to the popular Descendants movie on Disney. R absolutely loved this book! She finished it in about two days. There are themes of magic and villains because it is based on the children of the Disney villains.
Imagination Station Books – These are faith based. This is a spin-off series based on the Adventures in Odyssey series. They will be a quicker read but it’s a great series. The characters visit different areas in history and use the imagination station to get there.
How to Train Your Dragon – While there is a popular movie out with this title book series covers a great deal more of the story. This series is a huge favorite of a friend’s child.
Kingdom Keepers – This series focuses on a Disney theme park adventure after park hours. These are thicker chapter books but they are an easy read and perfect for kids on a higher reading level.
Magic Treehouse Books – This series takes readers to different points in history. Unlike Imagination Station these are not faith based. There are many adventures in this series.
Mary Poppins – This book is actually quite different from the movie. It may be fun to have you child read the books before watching the movie and then make a comparison of the differences between the two.
Nancy Drew – My daughter liked the mystery of these. She read them fairly quickly but really enjoyed the story line.
Peter and the Starcatchers – This series is a lot of fun! They focus on the back story of Peter Pan. We listened to these together as an audio and they are a ton of fun.
Spiderwick Chronicles – This series is fantasy based. My daughter really loves them. She has read them multiple times. There are some intense moments in the story line. If you child is afraid of monsters this may not be a good series for them.
The Little House Collection – This series is a classic. They are fairly simple to read and are very enjoyable.
Wayside School Collection – This series is silliness from the first page to the last. That being said, it’s a really fun series. My kids devoured these stories and laughed quite a bit.
What books does your advanced reader enjoy? I would love to add to this post and to my library list.
