We have been working on letter blends and spelling more in our homeschool as of late. There are a couple blends that each child struggles with. However, we wanted to work beyond the curriculum and try to have some fun with it. Instead of doing a spelling test this week we came up with this fun letter blend challenge game. This would be great for a small homeschool or it could easily be adapted to a classroom if needed.
Letter Blend Challenge Game
This game will play out differently based on where you are doing it and how many people are involved.
Letter Blend Word List – I used one from the curriculum we are currently working through. (Fundations)
Dry Erase Markers
Dry Erase Boards (We made our own.)
How to Play
Give each child a dry erase marker. (For a classroom you may want to pick two children at a time or set up two teams in a relay format.)
We set up 2 dry erase boards.
The first one to write the word correctly wins the point.
The other child has a chance to steal the point if the word is misspelled and they can correct it.
Add a little fun
Do you want to add more fun to it? We added fun little things they had to do in order to get to the boards. Here are a few of the things we did:
Hop 5 times like a bunny.
Spin in a circle 4 times before coming to the board.
Pretend you are having a tea party on your hand with an ant.
Whisper your abc’s.
Hop on one foot to the board.
If you are able to go outside you could add even more fun to this. Include options like running around the yard or even a fun obstacle course.
