A few years ago I decided to stop doing resolutions for the new year. It never really worked out even when I called them goals instead. Instead, I learned about the word of the year. This is a word that represents your focus for the coming year. I wanted to take a few minutes and share some of how my word of the year impacted my year last year. I am also going to tell you what I chose this year and why.
My Word of the Year
My 2017 Word of the Year Recap
For 2017 my word of the year has been endurance. When I picked that word at the end of last year I had no idea what was ahead of me. I had no idea the insanity 2017 would hold for our family. Let me walk you thru some of what we had to practice endurance with this year.
This year I had a lot of apathy towards homeschooling. I wasn’t against it. I didn’t hate it. I was just over the whole process. We actually walked into a school with our youngest considering putting him in full time. He decided against it and I am thankful he did. It was definitely hard for me in the early part of the year though. I had to practice some serious endurance to move past that and find our joy again.
I had a really hard time with balancing everything this year and really had to have some hard talks with the kids. There was a serious desire to just quit. Instead, I chose to push thru and the post above shares what we did to move past it. It involved a lot of humility from me and some definite honesty about my shortcomings.
This year I had to be 100% honest with myself and own the fact that I was walking thru some serious depression. I didn’t want to seek out help because I felt like that meant that I was failing. When I sat and talked with my doctor he reminded me that I didn’t have to be supermom and it was completely ok to have help when needed. I have come a long way and I am definitely feeling a lot better. I am so thankful for the ability to get the help I needed and work towards a healthier year.
We started something new with my oldest this year. She chose to do the online public school for 2 of her classes. This has been an interesting adjustment as she has worked on learning new study skills she didn’t have as well as learning to report to a teacher that isn’t me. It has been exhausting for both of us but she has done a brilliant job. She definitely rose to the occasion and has thrived in her classes.
This year was extremely tight for us. We had a lot of unexpected expenses as well as some very thin seasons. We had to be willing to tighten our belts and try new things. This meant taking on a new job for me and changing the way we budget. It wasn’t easy but we are starting to see some improvement. If you are going thru a hard financial season, you are not alone and it can get better.
This year we had a house fire. We are ok and we are back in our home but it was a very difficult season. We lived in a hotel for 5 weeks and are still in the process of trying to get the insurance to cover everything. I pray you never have to deal with a house fire as it is quite taxing emotionally, physically, and financially. I would never have made it without my mom and some really great friends who rallied around us and helped us rebuild.
There was a lot more that went down this year including some very difficult family drama I would rather not post about. Having my word of the year be endurance really reminded me to keep pressing thru on the really hard days. It reminded me to keep moving forward even when it seemed impossible.
My 2018 Word of the Year
As we head into 2018 I spent a lot of time thinking about what my word of the year will be. I think the word that best represents my hopes for 2018 is RESTORE.
I am hoping that some of what was broken and torn apart in our lives this year will be completely restored to where it needs to be. I have tons of goals for the coming year. I am hoping that with the focus of restoring things to where they should be or better will help me move forward in victory.
This means that this year you may see more posts about restoring what was lost or rebuilding what was broken. I look forward to seeing how this will play out in 2018 for sure.
