Both of the kids have 18 inch dolls like the American Girl dolls and they really enjoy playing with them together. This morning they were asking me for more clothes for their “daughters” but I wasn’t about to go spend retail prices for them. I pulled out my sewing machine and had a little fun putting something together. These won’t be exact measurements as each of these dolls is sized a bit different but it will be a great tutorial to help you make your own diy 18 inch doll skirt.
DIY 18 Inch Doll Skirt
Not all dolls are equal. Make sure to use the general idea outlined below understanding that your doll may be slightly different. I know the two dolls we own have very different figures.
You Will Need
Fat Quarter of Fabric
The How To
Fold your fabric in half.
Start by laying your fabric over the doll. You will want it to be the width of her waist plus an inch on each side.
Mark where you will want the skirt to end and add 1/2 an inch.
Cut at angle down both side of your skirt and cut a straight line where you want your length.
Flip your fabric so the patterned side touches and the inside is showing and make sure it is even.
Sew along the two long sides to connect your skirt pieces together.
Fold a quarter inch seam inward on the top and the bottom.
Sew these. Be care not to sew your skirt shut. The goal is only to sew the hem so that the extra thread doesn’t show.
Flip inside out and you have your skirt.
Our doll had a bit more hip than most dolls do. I cut a small straight line in the back. I made sure to sew down each side so it would not fray. This is easily covered by a dress but it helps it get over her hips.
If you want to make a shirt to go with the skirt, follow the procedure for the skirt using the measurements of the widest part of the chest.
You can add straps and buttons if you like. I did each of ours a different way.
