Disney parks brought me out for a screening of the new Star Wars movie. This does not influence my opinions though. All opinions in this post are 100% my own.
Last night I took off with a good friend of mine and went to an early screening of Star Wars the Last Jedi. This has definitely become one of my favorite movies! I will promise you a spoiler-free zone here as I would never want to ruin the amazing experience for you. I have had a lot of people ask, “Should my kids watch The Last Jedi.” I can’t tell you how to parent but I can give you some spoiler-free insight to help you make the choice.
Should my kids watch The Last Jedi?
Before I answer this question I have to say one thing, I am now a Star Wars fan to the core! I liked it. It was ok. Now after seeing this, I am a huge fan! This movie was absolutely incredible and took my breath away. I laughed more than I have in a long time and cried a few times as well. Even if you don’t go with the kids, go!
Strong Female Leads
This movie does a brilliant job of using strong female leads that aren’t scantily clad and unintelligent. Instead, they are key parts of the plot line and valuable assets! If you have a young girl who wants a strong woman to look up to in a movie, this is the movie! There are multiple options for very strong females who hold their own.
If your children have seen Force Awakens, they will be able to handle the violence in this one. I loved the lack of blood and gore. There was a much cleaner approach. While there was still violence, they handle it in a way that I believe won’t be jarring for younger children.
There are some new characters and animals in the series. Some of these are simply fantastic. Others will prompt some great conversations about the types of people we should trust. I won’t say which is which. I will simply say that there are new characters that will offer you some great teaching moments.
I loved the fact that heroes in this movie were flawed. They weren’t perfect heroes marching in to save the day. Instead, they had struggles, weaknesses, and even failures. It helps to drive home the point that even the best hero has weaknesses. I think this is such an important truth for children to see as they have failures and weaknesses as well.
Some of the characters in this movie showed hidden strengths we didn’t know existed. This gave us some great chances to talk about how we may not always see someone or something for what it really is. There can be so much more to a person than we ever realized. I loved this element of the movie in regards to my kids because it is so important to look beyond your preconceived notions.
Classic characters we love
This series is filled with some of the classic characters we love and they don’t disappoint. Mark Hamill’s performance in this movie as well of that of Carrie Fisher will go down in movie history. They do a fantastic job of bringing these characters into the current series while paying homage to the past. I definitely think your kids will enjoy these callbacks if they are fans of the original movies.
This movie was packed with little bits of humor throughout and I absolutely loved it! I can’t think of any of the humor that would be considered inappropriate. I will say that as a mom, I deeply identify with the characters pictured above. The humor is peppered throughout the movie to keep the tension of it at bay.
What did my kids think of the movie?
My daughter informed me that she is now a fan of Star Wars thanks to this movie. She loved the porg and enjoyed some of the mind bending new clues and hints about the next movie.
My son, on the other hand, loved the action and was really enjoying all of the classic characters he already loved.
Looking for an amazing place to watch the movie?
If you are in Orlando head down to Disney Springs and watch the movie there. I was so impressed with the theater and the staff there. It was truly a special experience to watch the movie and then come out and be surrounded by other fans in a Disney setting.
Have you seen it yet? Will your children be seeing the movie? Leave me a spoiler-free comment and let me know.
