I did receive 2 pre-screening tickets to facilitate this review. However, that does not influence my opinions. All opinions shared here are 100% my own.
Last night we left the kids with a sitter and went to see Solo together. We had to ask, “Is Solo appropriate for kids,” before taking our kids to see it. While we are huge fans of the Star Wars universe, all things Disney, and Han Solo, we had to be sure it was appropriate for the kids to enjoy with us. After seeing the movie, I am excited to share a spoiler-free review with you.
Is Solo Appropriate for kids?
**Disclaimer** These are my opinions. I know that all parents have different standards for their children. Please understand that I am only sharing this from the perspective of my own parenting experience.
Was there cursing in Solo?
I did not notice any curse words while watching the movie. There was the implication of curse word but it was not said. A friend said that she heard a few uses of the A word which went right over my head. I actually didn’t notice them at all. This will depend on how much you are looking for these words as I was not.
For the basis of language alone, my kids will definitely be allowed to see this movie. I was not bothered with how they chose to speak.
Were there sexual scenes in Solo?
As with most Star Wars movies, the movie stayed fairly clean in this regard. There were kissing scenes and some implications made that older kids might pick up on but as a whole, it was by far one of the cleaner movies in this regard. I only remember one scene with a more involved makeout scene and even that was a brief segment of the movie that was quickly moved past.
Was there violence in Solo?
There was some violence as this storyline revolves more around the life of Han Solo. You will see fighting, weapons, and explosions. As far as blood and gore, this movie does a fabulous job of avoiding this. I think it was very tastefully done. Anything that might have been too gory quickly became a cutscene.
There was one battle scene at the beginning of the movie that was a bit more intense and could be triggering for military vets or for young children who are bothered by these themes.
Will Solo scare my kids?
Some of the characters in the movie are very creative. I think there are a few that could potentially scare younger children. However, as a whole, they seemed pretty innocent. I think this will depend a lot on what your child in specific is afraid of. There is one scene with a “monster” of sorts that has a jump scare element to it but it is quickly followed up by a dose of comedy to get everyone laughing.
Was there alcohol or drug use in Solo?
There was what appeared to be a bar setting. Drinks were going around. That said, none of the drinks were outright implied as alcoholic. Without labels, it could be easy to say they were drinking something without alcohol. There wasn’t a scene where anyone’s behavior changed as a result of anything they drank or ingested in other ways.
Was there gambling in Solo?
Yes! Gambling is a key component to some of the story elements. If you are concerned with your children seeing a movie that features gambling as a positive thing, I don’t recommend this movie for you as there is a certain glamor attached to it in this movie.
Were there any themes children might not understand?
There were two components of the movie that children might not understand. There was a strong focus on poverty and its implications for your actions. There was also a strong focus on equality. I think that these are easier for children to overlook as they are generally handled in a way that is light and fun matching the overall feeling of the movie.
But, was it a good movie?
YES! Die-hard Star Wars fans will have things to pick apart as they always do. That said, it really was a well-made movie. Not only did it bring some background to the relationship with Han and Chewbacca but it did a great job of expanding on characters such as Lando.
I can’t say enough about how excellent Donald Glover was in the role of Lando. He truly took that character on and became him in so many ways. As far as Alden Ehrenreich in the role of Han, I think he did a brilliant job. I went into this expecting a prequel. With that in mind, I wasn’t expecting to see the Han we know from the movies. I expected some areas where he was weaker, softer, or not the same. With that in mind, I was able to genuinely enjoy his performance. I think if you are expecting Harrison Ford’s Han you will be disappointed.
There were some amazing cameos. I won’t name names to ruin it for you but we got to see some incredible Star Wars alumni in this film. There was even a moment when one showed up that dropped my husband’s jaw and left him stunned for 10 minutes. Be ready. It’s a doozy!
As a whole, we really loved this movie and fully intend to take the kids to see it. What about you? Will you be taking your kids to see Solo?
